About Soul Power Play

Soul Power Play is a social movement that empowers girls ages 10-13 to trust their instincts, lean into courage, and find joy in their journey! We believe it's crucial for girls to develop a strong sense of self before engaging in the virtual world. Our curriculum provides opportunities for girls to explore their values, strengths, and goals.

Our evidence-based workshops offer dynamic experiences for girls to develop emotional resilience, build meaningful connections, and embrace their unique potential. By emphasizing real-world interactions, self-discovery, and personal growth of both mind and body, Soul Power Play helps girls step into the world with confidence, strength, and joy.

Why Soul Power Play is Needed

The Impact of Excessive Screen Time on Girls' Mental Health

  • Girls who spend 5+ hours per day on social media are 3 times more likely to experience depression compared to those who spend less than an hour. (JAMA Pediatrics, 2019)

  • Heavy social media use has been linked to lower self-esteem, increased anxiety, and higher rates of loneliness in adolescent girls. (American Psychological Association, 2021)

  • Studies show that excessive screen time disrupts sleep patterns, which is crucial for emotional regulation and mental well-being. (Sleep Health Journal, 2020)

The Importance of Early Confidence-Building Experiences

  • By age 13, girls’ confidence drops by 30%, often due to social comparison and fear of failure. (The Confidence Code for Girls, 2018)

  • Girls who participate in structured programs that encourage self-expression, leadership, and resilience are more likely to take on challenges and develop a strong sense of self-worth. (National Institute on Child Health and Human Development, 2020)

  • Early participation in values-based programs leads to better emotional regulation, stronger decision-making skills, and greater long-term success. (Stanford University Research, 2019)

We Support the Wait Until 8th Initiative

At Soul Power Play, we help girls develop a strong sense of self in the real world. We are committed to helping girls build confidence, resilience, and in-person social connections—without the distractions of smartphones. That’s why we support the Wait Until 8th pledge, a national movement that encourages parents to delay giving their child a smartphone until at least the end of 8th grade. (Have you already given your child a smartphone? You can dial it back.)

What is the Wait Until 8th Pledge?

The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers parents to stand together and delay introducing smartphones into their children’s lives. By joining this initiative, families help reduce the social pressure for kids to get a phone too soon, ensuring elementary and middle school years remain focused on play, friendships, creativity, and personal growth. Let kids be kids!

Why It Matters

📵 Smartphones are distracting – Studies show that excessive screen time negatively impacts mental health, focus, and face-to-face communication skills.
❤️ Childhood should be about real-life connections – Time spent outdoors, playing, and engaging in meaningful activities is decreasing due to constant phone use. We agree with author Jonathan Haidt, that smartphones are “experience blockers”.
🤝 Strength in numbers – When families wait together, it’s easier to set boundaries and create a healthier tech culture for kids.

Our Commitment

At Soul Power Play, we encourage girls to engage fully in life— our program offers them empowering time away from social media and smartphone distractions. We proudly support the Wait Until 8th pledge and invite families in our community to join us in prioritizing presence, play, and personal development over screen time.
